When the incumbent government of Trinidad and Tobago called an early election, we had only thirty days to prepare for the election, as the campaign consulting firm to the opposition United National Congress. Fortunately, we had recently completed a poll and focus groups. The issue was crime.

Within days we completed our first television and radio commercials and began the “air war.” Our highly targeted campaign was the first of its kind in Trinidad and Tobago. Four thousand volunteers, a million and a half pieces of literature hand delivered in swing constituencies, and more than 20 rallies later, Basdeo Panday became the first Indian Prime Minister in the history of the country. In his first term unemployment was reduced taxes were cut, the budget was balanced, and citizens were protected from the devastation of crime and drugs. Then the focus turned to the future—and education.

Actual television script:

PANDAY: These children are what it’s all about. Making sure that each new generation of Trinidadians and Tobagians has an opportunity for a better quality of life.

That is why we are building new schools, putting technology in the classrooms, and working to end the common entrance exam.

We need to bring discipline and respect back to the classroom and to teach children that it is not the clothes that they have, but the values that they have, and the future they can build.

Trinidad and Tobago: Getting Better Every Day.

Why should serving in opposition keep a leader from helping those in need? The Honorable David Thompson, Member of Parliament, former Minister of Finance, and Leader of the Opposition, was not about to sit and watch familiar values in his country erode.

Thompson founded Families First, and worked to help restore responsibility and respect—to inspire neighbors to help neighbors—and to encourage children to stay away from crime and drugs. He went on to become the Prime Minister of Barbados.

Actual television script:

DAVID THOMPSON: At this time of the year, let us not forget the teachings of Jesus, and renew our faith throughout the year. Let us spend more time with our families, teach our children that it is not about the gear they have but the kind of people they should be.

Show them the difference between right and wrong. Give them the strength to say “no” to drugs and stealing. And demand respect and responsibility.
Let us renew our faith. It begins at home. Families First.

St. Vincent & the Grenadines

Laszlo did polling, focus groups radio and television advertising for the Unity Labour party of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The elections allowed the Unity Labour Party to more than double their seats in Parliament—and many of them were won or lost in fewer than 100 votes.

Excellent candidates such as entrepreneur Ken Boyea, advocate Stalkey John, Principal Miguel, and Mike Brown were elected for the first time in tough elections.

Actual television script:

VOICE-OVER: Unemployment and the high cost of living are out of control and the government is doing nothing. They’re too busy caring for themselves to care about us. It’s time for a change.

The ULP plan:

Increase banana and other agricultural production. Expand our markets. Promote technical and computer training. Increase good-paying tourism and manufacturing jobs.

This election, vote for more good jobs. Vote ULP. We’re ready.

I have known Ms. Jennifer Laszlo for over two years. Working with her has been a great pleasure since she delivers results, is sharp and incisive in her analysis and is extremely competent in responding to public perceptions.

Timely, effective, and efficient…excellent public relations and advertising services…Trinidad and Tobago can also testify to the immense research capabilities of Laszlo. The company has conducted survey and focus group research for us and in each of these instances its analysis and predications formed the basis for our decision-making. Anyone who contracts Laszlo will be making a very wise investment.

- Prime Minister Basdeo Panday, Trinidad and Tobago

Had it not been for your great insights and expertise, we would have been wiped off the election scene. Instead, we more than doubled our seats in Parliament, and we got a sizeable majority off the popular vote nationwide. You and your team offered excellent campaign training, polling, focus groups, television and radio ads, and did not leave our sides in times of crisis.
